Swakopmund International Beach Cup: Beacon for hope for youth
BY ADOLF KAURE
Director of Sport in the Ministry of Sports, youth and National Services, Jo-Ann Manuel, said that the recently launched inaugural Swakopmund Beach Soccer Cup is a beacon of hope for the youth.
Speaking on behalf of Deputy Minister Emma Kantema-Gaomas, Manuel said that the tournament is a testament to the power of sport in uniting communities, fostering healthy lifestyles, and providing a platform for young talents to excel.
“In an era where sedentary lifestyles are becoming increasingly common, beach soccer offers an exciting way to engage young people in physical activity enhancing their fitness, agility, and overall well-being,” she said. She further stated that the competition promotes social development and inclusion. “This tournament brings together boys and girls from Swakopmund and other regions of Namibia, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect.
It is a celebration of diversity and unity, essential values for our nation’s future,” she said. According to the executive director, the competition helps prevent crime and substance abuse. “By engaging our youth in constructive activities during the traditional football off-season, we are providing them with positive alternatives to crime, alcohol, and drug abuse,” said Manuel. The ambassador for the cup and former “Brave Warriors” coach, Ricardo Mannetti, said the competition allows youth to be distracted and away from social ills.
“Now we all know how difficult it is to keep the youth interested in a venture, and sports are really of the few things that can keep the youth focused and away from alcohol and drugs.
Doing this is a mammoth task, as we will need a strong family unit, a strong and disciplined community and consistent sports activities like this cup,” said Mannetti.
He explained why he agreed to be the ambassador of the tournament. “Now, why did I agree to be an ambassador of this cup? The answer is simple: I am passionate about being part of something that gives hope to the youth. Something that stimulates them and this Cup definitely, ticks all the boxes. And therefore, I will make sure to promote this initiative to the best of my abilities. And I’m very positive that this initiative will put a smile on our faces,” he said.
The Swakopmund Beach Soccer Cup is scheduled from the 24 to 26 of August at Platz Am Meer.
