Tax recounts SADC progress in final address

SADC executive secretary, Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax has recounted the progress that SADC has made during her tenure which came to a close at the 41st SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Lilongwe, Malawi this week.

Tax who took over the reins in 2013 said that while the region progressed well in terms of macroeconomic convergence over the years, it has however been severely hit by a dual shock of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fall in commodity prices.

Pin-pointing successes, Tax noted that the energy sector progressed between 2014 and 2020, where the commissioned power generation in the region increased by 19 738 Megawatts (MW), translating to 90 percent of the targeted capacity of 22000 MW. Access to electricity at weighted average, increased from 36 percent in 2014/2015 to more than 50 percent in 2020/2021.
