NamPower powering handball after partnership

NEWLY established sport of Handball which was recently registered with the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) is soon to become one of the biggest codes in the country after signing a partnership agreement with NamPower.

The joint partnership between the Namibia Handball Federation (NHF) and NamPower was announced at a media briefing on October 28, though nothing was given out as to how much NamPower was bring to the table.

Handball was played in the country in the early 90s but along the way it fell through the cracks due to lack of funding and interest from the general public, with deputy director in the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, Irvin Ndjavera the notably former handball player to have dominated the sport during his time as student at the University of Namibia (Unam).

Ndjavera who was also present at the sponsorship handing over recalled his glory days.

“It is good to see handball making a return. I used to play it when I was a student at Unam and I was the best player as I received a number of Player of the Year Awards. As a ministry, we are really grateful to see such a partnership,” Ndjavera said.

NHF President, Issy Nakamwe told Confidente that the partnership would enable the code to reach in all 14 regions of the country.

Currently the sport is being played in seven regions, namely //Karas, Erongo, Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena, Khomas and Oshikoto region.

The sport is expected to be rollout in other regions next year through a development program.
“NamPower’s partnership looks at popularising the game of Handball in all 14 regions of Namibia and assisting in sponsoring of equipment’s to empower participants as well as regional clubs in growing the sport. The length of the relationship would be determined by the quality work delivered by Handball.

“Nampower is a brilliant company dedicated to growing Namibian sport from grass-root level and growing of a Namibian child in reflection to building a better future generation. Namibia Handball Federation reached out to Nampower for sponsorship as well as partnership during our annual O4 regions players’ education outreach festival.

NHF is busy preparing for Regional school tournaments through school teachers that successfully completed the coaching workshop with the Confederation of Africa handball (CAHB) that was hosted between October 03-07.
