A bird’s eye view of the perks and benefits of elites in Namibia’s political and governance architecture reflects a glaring disparity between the lives of those in power and the layman.
These perks, such as water, electricity, housing and furniture and, even, entertainment are, in most instances – free of charge and are extended to high-ranking officials such as ministers, attorney-general Festus Mbandeka, director-general of the spy agency, Namibia Central Intelligence Service.

The auditor-general Junias Kandjeke, director-general of the National Planning Commission Obeth Kandjoze and all deputy ministers in the administration of President Hage Geingob – are also enlisted among the few haves’.

The above-listed politicians and officials form part of a clique of well-off individuals who all receive a telephone allowance of over N$ 1000 every year, records show, except Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, who doesn’t pay for any water, electricity, telephonic calls, or means of transportation for both private and official use.
