WBCG, NTA enhance logistics sector

By Business Reporter

IN the context of Namibia’s Logistics Hub Initiative and Capacity Development for the logistics industry the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) saw it fit to pursue cooperation with the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) based on clearly identified synergies.

As the executing agency for Namibia’s Logistics Master Plan, the WBCG is tasked to coordinate the activities and ensure stakeholder involvement with the implementation of the plan. Relating to capacity building, the Master Plan specifies that a Needs survey for vocational training must be conducted to identify skills gaps in the industry.

It further requires the establishment of common knowledge-based programmes to address these identified skills deficits.

The partnership between the NTA and WBCG was formalised on Wednesday, 18 March 2020, when the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which allows the partners to mutually benefit within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) System.

The NTA, under it’s mandate, contributes to the establishment of an effective and sustainable system of skills formation and provides the skills required for accelerated development in the work environment.

The collaboration will conduct research and data collection, in order to determine the skills needed. Using the WBCG’s strong affiliation to the private sector logistics operators, the organisation is able to assist the NTA to collect the required information.

The MoU allows the WBCG and NTA to work together to ensure that both organisations achieve their assigned mandates.

“We look forward to supporting the industry as it develops its services to compete in the global logistics arena,” explains WBCG’s CEO, Mbahapu Tjivikua.

Once the research is complete and validated, the team will be assigned to develop a special programme, which includes the training, assessment, issuing of awards and quality assurance in line with the Namibian Qualifications Framework. The industry will further benefit from the reintegration of apprenticeships into the Training and Vocational Education system, where NTA will deploy trainees to its NQA-accredited apprenticeship programme.
