Two men at Uis arrested for child-rape

TWO elderly men were arrested in Uis over the weekend following a complaint that they had during the month of August on various occasions raped a minor child at two different houses in a nearby location.

According to a police report released on Sunday, the victim, an eight-year-old minor girl was left at family’s house by the grandmother where one of the suspects reside. It is understood that the victim had been sexually assaulted by her grandmother’s boyfriend, while the other suspect was also said to be a boyfriend of child’s guardian, the woman in whose care the eight-year-old girl had been left.

During an unspecified period the two rape suspects, aged 67 and 51 years old, respectively, reportedly forced themselves onto the minor victim and sexually defiled her on different occasions and “promised to give her money.

” The two men were arrested over the weekend and were due to appear before the local magistrate this week.

Further details of the alleged crimes are sketchy, but it is understood that the matter was only reported to the police last Friday after the child’s guardian had returned home.

The latest case of child sex abuse comes as the Namibian Police announced at the end of last month that 26 rape cases involving minors were reported countrywide during July and August. It was not clear how many such cases go unreported.

Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi warned of a growing trend of rape cases involving minor children.

“We hereby appeal to all parents and the public at large to be vigilant when looking after minors as this will prevent their children from becoming victims,” Kanguatjivi said.
