Unam rugby team looks unstoppable

WITH only two rounds of matches still to go, FNB University of Namibia (UNAM) Rugby Club looks favourite to lift the Windhoek Lager Namibia Rugby Premier League (NRPL). However, they first need to reach the final of the league.

They remain at the top of the log with 66 points from 14 matches played, which is enough to guarantee them a place in the knockout stage.

UNAM strengthened their lead at the top following an emphatic 31-23 win against Kudus last Saturday.

In second place is FNB Wanderers Rugby Club with 63 points from 14 league matches after they destroyed helpless Simonis Storm Dolphins at Swakopmund 66-0.

Third place remains in the hands of Kudus, who has 53 points from 14 matches played, but it is that crucial fourth place that is up for grabs, with Grootfontein Rugby Club currently occupying it with 39 points.

However, FNB Reho Falcon is breathing down their neck at 33 points on the fifth-place side.

Grootfontein defeated outclassed FNB Western Suburbs 61-7 over the past weekend, and they could make history by becoming the first team from Grootfontein or, to say, from Otjozondjupa Region to lift the premiership crown.

Trustco United are still in the hunt for that all-important fourth place as they do have 32 points from 13 league matches, followed by FNB Rehoboth Club on 30 points, FNB Western Suburbs have 24 points and bottom-of-the-table team Simone Storm Dolphins, a team hailing from Swakopmund with five points and looks like they are gone down to the lower division.

All teams must play 16 league matches before the knockout stage, which comprises the top four.

Johan Louw, coach at Grootfontein Rugby Club, has said that he has been impressed by the level of his players despite his side only being in its third season in top-flight rugby.

“The goal for the team is to reach the play-offs phase of the league competition. More wins will improve the spirit in the team,” said Louw
