Unregistered doctor under investigation for patient’s death

THE health ministry is on the firing line after it allegedly allowed a medical doctor, who is not registered to practise in the country, to treat patients at the Engela District Hospital in Ohangwena region.

An impeccable source at the hospital told this publication that the doctor, an Algerian national, (name supplied) started working at the hospital in March 2021. This is despite the fact that she was not registered with the Namibia Health Professional’s Council (NHPC), which regulates health professionals in the country.

In addition to this, she was also not in the health ministry’s database as their employee. Also the doctor in question did not complete a two-year internship for her to fully qualify as a doctor in the country as stipulated by the Health Act.
