Namibia has been urged to keep a keen eye on a new bill submitted to the United States Congress calling for a full review of the country’s bilateral relationship with South Africa due to its historic lawsuit against the state of Israel against its genocide on the Gaza strip at the International Court of Justice.

The bipartisan bill, which was introduced by US Republican congressman John James and Democratic Party congressman Jared Moskowitz this week, could threaten South Africa’s prospects to benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

A cohort of local economists informed Confidente that this threat may pose a grave danger to Namibia, particularly its acute dependence on South Africa for import goods and services and its foreign income from its Southern African Customs Union (SACU) receipts.
