OMPATA web series which tells the story of two drug-dealers and demonstrating their lifestyle in the dusty streets of Katutura features new actors with the aim of exposing them to the global film industry.

In an interview with Confidente, founder of the web series, filmmaker Nino Pequeno said Ompata has given an opportunity to 10 upcoming actors including a few supporting acts to showcase their talent in the series.

“The series does not feature well known acting stars because we wanted to showcase fresh talent. We wanted to work with budding actors and actresses because we felt like it was the right thing to do. I have also noticed that we have quite a lot of good upcoming actors in our country, so I wanted to give them a chance to show the word what they are capable of.

Pequeno said he started working on the series alongside co-director Dorian Jantze on July 28 after brainstorming the idea one Sunday afternoon.

“I am glad that something that started off from nothing is now becoming popular and the unconditional support from the viewers is encouraging,” he added.

Musician Fillemon Mabuzza who is starring in the series described his set experience as ‘thrilling’ saying that despite financial challenges, he is grateful to have been given an opportunity to show off his other talent.

“I love acting … I think more than I love music. The series came at a time when the pandemic started and we wanted to keep ourselves busy. The idea was brainstormed and we started, just like that without a budget,” he said.

He said, sometimes, getting a project off the ground is the only thing people should look at without stressing too much over funds.

“We are using our own money just to be able to get somewhere with this film. We can only hope for the best, we just want to work.”

Pequeno further mentioned that the first season consists of five episodes which detail a pair’s exploits and eventual betrayals.  So far, Pequeno said the first episodes have been received well with viewers demanding for more content.

“The feedback is quite positive.

Namibians are enjoying and loving it and at the same time they are the ones keeping us going even though it’s a non-funded film with no budget … we are just a few people hustling with the little we get as a crew.
