Young sensation Ohm quits swimming over lack of funding

• By Michael Uugwanga

TOP local swimmer Oliver Ohm has quit swimming because of a lack of funding and has now changed the code to weightlifting and bodybuilding so he can focus on further studies.

Ohm is a pupil at St George’s Diocesan College and is yet to complete his AS levels to enroll with the University of Namibia (UNAM) Medicine School to study towards becoming an anesthesiologist.

“I quit swimming after Long Course Nationals in February 2023. Several reasons contributed to this. The biggest contributing reason was the lack of funding to participate in international events, as my parents were the primary funding source. You put in years of hard work, training daily for hours to qualify for international events, only to be disappointed because your parents do not have the funding to send you. Another contributing factor is that I achieved one of my main swimming goals: participating at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Junior World Championships (in Peru 2022).

Unfortunately, due to another main goal in life, my desire to study medicine, I must sacrifice my sport as training takes up most of my time.

This was a tough decision but an essential one. I need to focus on my studies to obtain the best possible grades to be accepted into an excellent university to study medicine. I am hoping to study at UNAM Medicine School,” said Ohm.

Born 18 years ago in Windhoek, Ohm has increased his body weight, which is beyond a swimmer’s, and he has no regrets.
