African social app empowers youth

AFREE team

A new chapter in African digital innovation began on 28 June 2025 as young Namibians gathered at Namcol Hall in Windhoek to witness the local launch of AFREE, a social media platform built by Africans, for Africans.
Developed by a group of Togolese software engineers and co-creators from across the continent, AFREE is now available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app promises a space for young people to express themselves freely, connect with peers across borders, and showcase their creativity using features tailored to African users.

Speaking at the launch, WolfTech Trading CC, CEO Lasarus Iithete described the platform as more than a product. “AFREE isn’t an app. It’s a digital passport to possibility, built to express African values, energy, and identity,” he said.
WolfTech coordinated the launch with technical support from Kyrgyzstani developer Baktibek Batyrkanov, who joined the event virtually.

Designed with youth in mind, AFREE allows users to share content, interact meaningfully, and even customize their digital spaces to reflect their culture and creativity. It mirrors the features of international social media platforms but adds an African twist putting the continent’s voice and identity at the forefront.

Miss Namibia 2024, Prisca Anyolo, delivered a keynote speech encouraging young Namibians to use technology for personal growth and business. “Your phone is not just for selfies and likes.
It can be your startup office, your classroom, and your voice,” she said, reflecting on how her own mobile device helped her launch a beauty business.

The launch signals a broader push for tech sovereignty across Africa. It speaks to the growing confidence among young Africans in building and using tools made for their own realities.
With AFREE, youth now have a digital platform rooted in their lived experiences and aspirations one that promotes connection, innovation, and the spirit of pan-African collaboration.
