FNB WSL top goal scorer, golden gloves race heats up

Only one goal separates the top three contenders for the coveted FNB Women Super League (WSL) Golden Boot award as this season is heading towards an exciting climax.
Beauties FC striker Fiola ‘Halaand’ Vliete leads with 14 goals, followed closely by FC Ongos midfielder Memory Ngonda and Khomas NamPol’s goal-shooter Shange Tomas, both with 13 goals.
Vliete, who holds the FNB WSL record of 57 league goals achieved in the 2022/2023 season, has an opportunity to increase her tally against Windhoek City on Saturday at the NFA Technical Centre at 15:00. Meanwhile, Ngonda has a strong chance to match or surpass Vliete’s current goal count as FC Ongos welcomes Namib Daughters from Swakopmund, a team struggling to secure their second win of the season.
Tomas, however, will be sidelined due to injury when Khomas NamPol faces an in-form African Stars Queens team from the north. Stars attacker Albertina ‘Kazora’ Fillipus, with six goals so far, will have the chance to add to her total.
NamPol travels to the Uukwangula field in Oshakati to play against second-placed Stars, a team considered one of the favorites to win the FNB WSL title for the first time.
Another contender for the Golden Boot is Julinho Athletic’s versatile player, Beverly Uueziua, who has scored nine goals despite playing in various positions, including left back, right back, winger, midfielder, and striker.
Julinho Athletic is set to face struggling Okahandja FC, who boast 15-year-old striker Tamar Hangula, who has six goals.
Other matches will feature Arrows Ladies against V-Power.
The Golden Glove currently belongs to Stars’ goalkeeper Laurinda Mateus, who has recorded nine clean sheets and has yet to concede a goal. The only goal Stars conceded occurred when Matheus was not in goal. This compares to FC Beauties and Brave Gladiators’ goalkeeper Melissa Matheus, who has eight clean sheets.
NUST Babes, with only one win this season, will face UNAM Bokkies in the university derby at UNAM Stadium, where UNAM Bokkies, with four wins, are favoured to win at home.
