The Helvi Kondombolo sports filed at Onamatanga in Omusati Region, will once again host the annual horse racing tournament this Saturday, according to organizer John Sheehama.
This will be the 15th edition of the tournament since its inception in 2010. The tournament aims at promoting horse racing events in that part of the country, while at the same time honouring the late mother of the Founding President Sam Nujoma.
Horse racing has not been that popular in particular in the northern part of the country, unlike in other parts known for hosting big horse racing tournaments that are heavily funded by the corporate world.
In an interview with Confidente this week, Sheehama noted that so far, 15 individuals have registered and confirmed their attendance to partake in horse racing.
“Registration will be N$200 per distance and there will be no limit on the number of entries. For instance, one can register in the 2,000m and 1600m races and pay N$ 400. You can even register your horse to race in all the categories,” said Sheehama. The winner in the horse racing category is expected to walk away with N$5,000 and a trophy, while runner-up will receive N$3,000 the third placed winner will be consoled with N$ 2,000.
He indicated that this year’s event will include archery, the winner will get N$1,500, runner up N$1,000 and the third winner will take home N$500.
