Okahao market shapes traders
By Gerson David
After years of struggle and limited trading space, the Okahao Town Council has finally constructed a second open market near the district hospital. This development comes as a major relief for street vendors and small-scale entrepreneurs who, for many years, operated under challenging conditions with minimal space and poor facilities. The new market aims to address these long-standing challenges while uplifting the local economy and empowering small business owners to grow sustainably.
Under the vibrant leadership of Comrade Cornelia Iyambula, the council has made significant strides in ensuring that the town’s traders are well accommodated. Iyambula and her team have worked tirelessly to create a lasting solution that benefits both the vendors and the broader community. The establishment of this new market forms part of Okahao’s broader vision of promoting local trade, improving livelihoods, and fostering inclusive economic growth. The facility provides a clean, organized, and accessible environment where traders can operate safely and productively.
Many vendors who have already begun operating from the new facility have expressed deep appreciation for this development. One of the entrepreneurs, Ms. Ndapandula, shared her gratitude, saying: “We are really happy with the new open market because at least now we are taking something back home. In the beginning, things were not like this, but today people know the place. Even those who come for Oshikatakwata every Tuesday stop to support us. Let’s give credit where it’s due.”
The new open market features 81 trading stands, all of which are currently occupied. Together with the older market located in town, this new addition has significantly helped reduce congestion while providing more trading opportunities for the growing number of vendors in Okahao. This expansion has also improved hygiene, security, and customer flow, ensuring that both traders and consumers enjoy a more pleasant market experience.
This project stands as a shining example of how effective local leadership and community-centred initiatives can transform lives. It reflects a strong commitment to economic empowerment, poverty reduction, and sustainable urban development.
The Okahao Town Council continues to urge the public to support local entrepreneurs by buying from the new market. Each purchase made there not only sustains families but also contributes to building a stronger, more self-reliant Okahao.
