Solar-Powered Cinematic Hub earmarked for Swakopmund

Namibia, with its breathtaking landscapes and cinematic allure, has long been a favourite destination for filmmakers. Now, Swapokmund-based filmmaker, Guy Nockels and his partners, are taking the film industry to the next level with plans to establish the Desert Dunes Film Studios in Swakopmund.
The state-of-the-arty facility, set to begin construction in early 2025, promises to revolutionize film production in Namibia and solidify its position as a global filming destination. With a vision for sustainable filming, the studio will be located on a 115-hectare plot in Swakopmund and will be powered by an 18-hectare solar facility, generating 14,000 MWh of energy annually.
The eco-friendly approach includes two Tesla megapacks for energy storage and backup diesel generators, representing a N$370 million investment in total, including in renewable energy. The studio is also earmarked to include fifteen thousand palm trees to help combat the effects of environmental sensitivity.
Additionally, four soundstages, a sizable backlot, post-production and animation studios, a credit union, daycare centre, offices and boardrooms will form part of the design of the world-class film studio. This infrastructure will address a longstanding challenge for filmmakers in Namibia – a lack of world-class studio facilities.
Previously, productions like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Mummy had to fly in crews and equipment for interior scenes, significantly increasing costs and logistical complexity. With the new studio, Namibia will no longer be just an open-air filming location, but is set to become a one-stop destination for filmmakers, as this development is expected to attract multi-million-dollar productions, boosting the local economy and creating jobs for local talent.
In December 2024, Canada-based partner in the studio, James Russell confirmed the submission of a 223-page application to the Municipality of Swakopmund, adding that it has long been a dream of his to build a world-class motion picture studio in Namibia, which is likely his family’s ancestral home.
Russell pleaded via Facebook.
As it relates to the progress of the development, Public Relations Officer at the Municipality of Swakopmund, Linda Mupupa expressed excitement about project, while also confirming that the application has been received by council.
“However, the developers must adhere to standard procedures and internal forums. The matter is still pending discussion at the Investment Committee level before being presented to Council,” she added.
