Sport Ministry Denies Plans to Hand Over Rundu Stadium

Rundu Sports Stadium

Despite previous reports suggesting an imminent handover of the Rundu Sport Stadium to the Rundu Town Council, the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service has refuted such a move.
The stadium has long suffered from a poorly maintained playing surface due to insufficient water supply, prompting calls from local football enthusiasts for a transfer of ownership to the town council. This, they argue, would ensure better upkeep.
Rundu Sport Stadium serves as home ground for two Premiership teams, Julinho Athletic and Cuca Tops, as well as former Premiership clubs like Rundu Chiefs and United Stars.
Erastus Haitengela, executive director of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, clarified that the Ministry has no intention of relinquishing control of the stadium, despite acknowledging concerns about the water supply.
“The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service wishes to clarify that it has no plans to hand over the Rundu Sport Stadium to the Rundu Town Council, nor does it intend to transfer ownership,” Haitengela stated.
Regarding the water shortage, the Ministry had previously secured agreements with undisclosed partners to deliver water to the stadium, particularly to the pothole-ridden pitch, which hinders play. While local teams have adapted to the pitch’s condition, it remains a significant challenge.
Haitengela indicated that a resolution to the water supply issue is forthcoming.
“The poor condition of the pitch at the Rundu Sport Stadium is due to insufficient water supply to the suburb where the stadium is located, which falls under the responsibility of the Rundu Town Council. Over the past five years, the Ministry made alternative arrangements with partners who generously assisted in watering the pitch using their water tanks. Unfortunately, these partners are no longer able to provide this support, resulting in the current state of the field. The Ministry recognizes the importance of the stadium, particularly as it serves as the home ground for four teams. We are actively exploring sustainable solutions to address the water crisis and ensure the proper maintenance of the facility going forward,” Haitengela explained.
