Sport Ministry Spends N$5.6M To Aid Cricket Growth

The Ministry of Sport, Youth, and National Service (MSYNS) has spent a total of N$5.6 million towards the growth of cricket, a commitment that is set to continue from the government, despite ongoing criticism regarding the ministry’s perceived lack of financial support for sports in general.
Addressing the senior women’s cricket team, nicknamed the Capricorn Eagles, on Monday, ahead of their trip to Uganda for the T20 International matches (held from March 5th to March 18th), Deputy Minister of MSYNS, Emma Kantema-Gaomas, stated that the government (MSYNS) has demonstrated its commitment to cricket by investing approximately N$2.5 million in the development of the National Cricket Sports Grounds in Olympia.
Kantema-Gaomas made this announcement during the Capricorn Eagles’ send-off on Monday, as they prepared to travel to Uganda, the host of the T20 International matches featuring Uganda, Namibia, Hong Kong, and Nepal.
“This facility (National Cricket Sports Grounds) is a testament to our dedication, providing essential resources for all cricket players, including our Capricorn Eagles. Additionally, in the financial year 2024/2025, the government has supported Cricket Namibia with N$3.1 million, totalling N$5.6 million in support, underscoring our ongoing commitment to the sport’s growth and success.
“Initiatives like this are vital for the Ministry of Sport, Youth, and National Service, as they align with our mission to foster talent, promote equal opportunities, and inspire the next generation. By supporting and developing sports, we not only enhance national pride but also invest in the future of our youth. The Namibian government remains committed to supporting your journey and the growth of sports across the nation. Together, we will continue to create opportunities and provide the resources needed for our athletes to thrive,” said Kantema-Gaomas.
She also reminded the Capricorn Eagles to always represent the country with pride, as the entire nation would be watching their results across various platforms.
This is the Capricorn Eagles’ first tour of the year. “As you step onto the field in Uganda, remember that you are not just playing a game; you are representing a nation that believes in you. Play with passion, resilience, and confidence. You have already made us proud.”
Capricorn Group continues to partner with the Eagles and has enjoyed a strong relationship over the past few years.
“Last year, we proudly renewed our partnership with Cricket Namibia, and we continue to be inspired by the incredible progress of the Capricorn Eagles,” said Marlize Horn, Capricorn Group Executive: Brand & Corporate Affairs.
Cricket Namibia’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Johan Muller, said the financial support from Capricorn Group continues to positively impact the lives of young female athletes.
This financial injection has contributed to the women’s team being ranked 17th in the world.
“Capricorn Group has been instrumental in elevating women’s cricket in Namibia. Their continued support is helping us build a strong foundation for future generations of players, adding to the growing excitement. Namibia recently earned One Day International (ODI) status and now ranks 17th in the world. Namibia will play in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa World Cup qualifiers for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026. The country is also set to host a major ICC tournament from August 31st to September 7th, 2025, further cementing its place on the global cricket map,” said Muller.
