The Fisheries Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance Coordination Centre (MCSCC) Board of Directors convened its second meeting in South Africa from March 4-6, 2025, to advance regional strategies against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This issue poses a significant threat to Namibia’s marine resources and coastal economy.

Geingos calls for intergenerational unity

Former First Lady Monica Geingos has emphasized the need for unity across generations, during her recent visit to Liberia.
As Chairperson of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Centre for Women and Development (EJS Centre), Geingos joined global leaders in the Librian capital, Monrovia, to celebrate the Centre’s fifth anniversary, which coincided with International Women’s Day.

As the countdown towards the end of President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba’s term as Head of State begins, analysts suggest that his administration will be remembered for its steady approach to governance and laid-back demeanour.
Political analyst Natji Tjirera notes that Mbumba, despite his rather enigmatic persona, assumed leadership following the passing of the country’s most flamboyant and well-loved president. As such, Tjirera asserts, Mbumba faced the challenge of filling very big shoes in the public domain while also steering the Namibian ship forward.

109 individuals not yet found (…the growing mystery )

The number of missing persons in Namibia continues to rise, with recent Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL) statistics showing 109 individuals still unaccounted for. Since January 2024, 158 people have been reported missing, leaving many cases unsolved and families in distress.

Cabinet to shrink to 12 ministries (…as President-Elect aims to redress bureaucracy with pragmatism)

President-elect and newly appointed leader of Swapo, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, promises a major shake-up in the legislature, as numerous members of the executive face dismissal.
This move is part of her deliberate effort to reduce the number of Cabinet ministers to between 12 and 15, with no deputies.
Currently, Namibia has a total of 21 ministries, headed by both ministers and their deputies, including the Office of the Prime Minister.

SA leaders hail Nandi-Ndaitwah’s ascendancy

South African politicians have expressed their confidence in Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency for Namibia, citing that this does not only speak to the maturity of Namibia’s democracy for producing the first democratically elected woman president, but also a sign that women leaders are as good as any man on any day. 

Incredible Female Cricketer van Zyl Retires

The country’s women’s senior cricket side, the Capricorn Eagles, will start life without without one of its best, if not the best, female cricketers to come out of this country: Irene van Zyl, following her retirement from the game.
Van Zyl (40), who learned to play cricket at the tender age of 12, surprisingly only stepped onto the international arena at the age of 33.
In 2019, she made her Capricorn Eagles debut against Botswana in Windhoek, and never looked back since that debut.

Sport Ministry Spends N$5.6M To Aid Cricket Growth

The Ministry of Sport, Youth, and National Service (MSYNS) has spent a total of N$5.6 million towards the growth of cricket, a commitment that is set to continue from the government, despite ongoing criticism regarding the ministry’s perceived lack of financial support for sports in general.
